I have recently discovered VNC (probably because it is new) and it
certainly works well - X server to Win viewer. It seems to be the answer
to many a prayer but typically such solutions throw up questions - the
more you do, the more is demanded! It certainly puts Oracle/Olivetti on
the map.
I am of preference a Linux/X user but sadly some of my work is MS based.
I would therefore like to have a Windows 95 machine that just sits in the
attic or somewhere connected via an ethernet. It will thus appear to be a
session on my Linux machine - ie W95 under Linux, which is the right way
for it to be. It will have nothing attached - hence the absent subject.
However, there is a particular problem. I will obviously have to have a
graphics card in the Win95server - an S3Virge with 4Mb would do since I
don't play games all day and that's what's in the Linux machine. I don't
want to have to buy a real screen 'cos they are pricey and a waste of
space and energy if I am not using them.
I *could* site the machines together and use a Maplin junction box (or
fiddle about behind the machines) for screen, kbd and mouse to set it up
and then switch over but that is not very pretty and also a physical
security risk. I want to site the W95 machine under the bench by my Linux
mail/file server and leave it on all the time. I have an old VGA terminal
but I couldn't use that to set it up 'cos the card frequency would blow up
the VT.
So is there anyway that W95 could be configured to come up and work
immediately via VNC without there being any connected hardware other than
the card. I have a password protection on the W95 machine. Would it be
possible in NT or 98 (although for the price I might as well buy a second
screen)?
I know running a Winserver isn't the most efficient way of doing it but
233 Pentia are not too expensive these days and that should be plenty
powerful enough. The X side would currently run on a humble 586 although
that will be enhanced at some stage.
Any thoughts - for the present or planned versions - will be welcome.
A second and minor question - can I make the viewer machine beep by
echoing \007 -n -e in some way? Then I can know if my ppp connection has
not dropped without tailing /var/log/messages.
